VHS Thursdays Begin: From Shirley Temple to Shaolin Masters

🛒 Summer Thrift Picks #2

Hey cinephiles,
Happy Thursday and welcome to the first-ever VHS Edition of Thrift Picks! Starting this week, Tuesdays will be all about discs (DVDs, Blu-rays, etc.), while Thursdays are now dedicated to the wonderful world of VHS. That means clamshells, slipcases, and dusty gems straight from the analog vault. I’m you’re as excited to revisit these forgotten treasure as much as I am!

📺 Here’s what we unearthed this week:

  1. 🎞️ Los Hermanos del Hierro (My Son the Hero) – A visually stunning Mexican western with chilling family themes.

  2. 🎞️ Warning Examples For Our Day – Religious docu-drama from Watchtower Bible Society.

  3. 🎞️ Liar Liar – Jim Carrey classic; couldn’t resist picking up yet another copy.

  4. 🎞️ One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest – Finally filling a long-standing watchlist gap.

  5. 🎞️ Radio Flyer – A young Elijah Wood and an emotionally charged Richard Donner film.

  6. 🎞️ A.M. & P.M. Tai Chi for Beginners – Workout VHS featuring David-Dorian Ross and Carol McPhee.

  7. 🎞️ Shaolin Master Killer (The 36th Chamber) – Widescreen, uncut, with bonus interviews.

  8. 🎞️ Jerry Maguire – Had to grab it for the classic slipcase.

  9. 🎞️ The Good Thief – Nick Nolte blind buy—heist flick potential.

  10. 🎞️ Return to Snowy River – Disney sequel find I’d never seen before.

Share The Year I Became

  1. 🎞️ Braveheart – Already have the DVD, but found a pristine VHS copy.

  2. 🎞️ Heidi (Shirley Temple) – Sealed clamshell edition to match the DVD.

  3. 🎞️ Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – Walt Disney Masterpiece Edition.

  4. 🎞️ Bright Eyes (Shirley Temple) – Another sealed gem—look at those costumes!

  5. 🎞️ Dimples (Shirley Temple) – Opened, but part of a growing Temple trio set.

  6. 🎞️ The Absent-Minded Professor – The original Flubber! Time for a double feature.

  7. 🎞️ Casablanca – My seventh copy. Don’t ask. It’s officially a harmless obsession.

Got a favorite VHS format or cover style? Slipcase, clamshell, lenticular? Let me know—I'm flipping out over the variety.

💬 THRIFT THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

Some movies just feel better on tape. It’s not nostalgia—it’s texture. From hissing audio to tapes spines and handwritten labels, every VHS comes with its own aura.

🛎️ COMING UP

I’ll be back next Tuesday with another disc-based Thrift Picks haul. And don’t forget—this Sunday’s Two for the Shelves double feature dives into something deeply sinister.

Until then,
Stay curious and keep digging,
—E. A. Bland
