Why Movies Matter: How Films Shape Culture and Society

Reel Reflections
2

Movies have always been more than just entertainment to me—they’re a mirror reflecting our collective hopes, fears, and dreams. They unite us, challenge us, and push society forward. But lately, I’ve been wondering:

In an era of streaming and profit-driven content, have we forgotten why films matter?

To me, the power of cinema lies in its ability to tell stories that resonate across cultures and generations. A single film can spark global conversations, challenge societal norms, or inspire movements. I think of Schindler’s List shining a light on history, or Black Panther redefining representation in Hollywood. These films didn’t just entertain—they changed how I see the world.

Yet, I can’t ignore the crisis the industry faces today. Strikes, AI, and the pursuit of profit threaten to dilute the art form. As I reflected in my journal recently:

when we forget the power and responsibility of this medium, we produce things just for money, leaving society stagnant.

Too many films/tv shows now prioritize ratings, profits, and awards over meaning, and I can’t help but feel that something vital is being lost.

But I still believe in the magic of movies. Every film is a collaboration of hundreds—directors, writers, actors, cinematographers, and more—each pouring their creativity into a shared vision. These artisans bring their time, energy, and lives together to communicate a message. So, even when a film falls short, I can’t help but respect the effort behind it.

Movies have also taught me so much. They’ve given me frameworks for understanding complex emotions, relationships, and even societal issues. A well-crafted film can make me laugh, cry, or question my beliefs. It’s why I advocate for deeper engagement—not just watching, but seeing the layers of meaning in every frame.

So, why do movies matter to me?

Because they remind me of our shared humanity. They challenge me to think, feel, and grow. And in a divided world, that’s a power I believe is worth protecting.

Takeaway:

Next time you watch a film, ask yourself:

  • What’s the message?

  • How does it reflect or challenge society?

Because to me, movies aren’t just stories—they’re the heartbeat of our culture.

Until next time, see you soon!
