Hey everyone, welcome back to The Year I Became, a Film Critic. To kick off the year, I’m sharing a quick roundup of my favorite films from last week. Maybe you’ve seen some of these, maybe you haven’t, but trust me—they’re all worth watching.
1. The Social Network (2010)
Directed by David Fincher, this film isn’t so much about Facebook as it is about the power struggles and relationships behind the scenes during its early days. Jesse Eisenberg delivers a sharp performance as Mark Zuckerberg, navigating ambition, betrayal, and success in this gripping drama.
I hadn’t watched it since its release, and revisiting it on January 1st reminded me just how compelling it is. Stunning cinematography, a brilliant script by Aaron Sorkin, and Trent Reznor’s unforgettable score make this a must-watch.
FILMS Score: 10/10.
Available to rent or buy.
2. The Mummy (1999)
Starring Brendan Fraser, this action-packed adventure follows Rick O’Connell as he battles an ancient curse and the resurrected Imhotep. Equal parts fun and creepy, it’s a nostalgic ride through tomb-raiding chaos, with plenty of laughs and scares along the way.
Watching it on VHS took me straight back to the family living room, freaking out with my siblings. It holds up as a perfect blend of action, humor, and chills.
FILMS Score: 7/10.
Available to rent or buy.
3. Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993)
This sequel brings Whoopi Goldberg’s Sister Mary Clarence back into the habit, this time helping a struggling Catholic school choir find their voices. With standout performances and some unforgettable musical moments, it’s a feel-good classic.
I haven’t seen this since my early 20s, so I’m eager to revisit it for a proper FILMS score. It’s just as fun as I remembered and a VHS gem in my collection.
FILMS Score: Pending
Available to rent or buy.
4. Romeo Must Die (2000)
Starring Jet Li, this martial arts action flick combines incredible fight sequences with a modern twist on Romeo and Juliet. Aaliyah shines in one of her final roles, and the soundtrack is iconic.
I vaguely remember seeing this on TV as a kid, but never gave it a proper watch. Finding it on VHS felt like fate—I’m excited to dive back in and give it the attention it deserves.
FILMS Score: Pending
Available to rent or buy.
5. The Punisher (1989)
Before Jon Bernthal redefined the role, Dolph Lundgren was the original Punisher. Living in the sewers and armed with a vengeance-driven mission, his portrayal is gritty, quirky, and action-packed.
This movie delivers everything from a wild amusement park shootout to a surprisingly atmospheric score. It’s pure ’80s action chaos in the best way possible.
FILMS Score: 7.5/10.
Only available to buy.
That wraps up the first weekly roundup of the year! I’ll be back Friday with the first film program of 2025. Don’t miss it—it’s going to be packed with incredible films and fresh insights.
