The Collective Power of Human Potential: A Symphony of Synergy
Water From the Well
Let's embark on a brief journey back to 2016-17, when I was an Assistant Store Manager at Forever 21 in NYC.
Initially at Union Square, I was later transferred to Times Square, where managing daily foot traffic and maintaining operations was a Herculean task. Thankfully, my background in the Food & Beverage industry prepared me for the unique stresses of fashion retail.
During that period, the store struggled to manage the overwhelming daily foot traffic, making it nearly impossible to maintain upkeep, conduct training, or manage the high turnover rate. Having started my career in the Food & Beverage industry, I realized that the stress levels in fashion retail, though always high, did not compare to the demands of satisfying a hungry crowd.
Realizing that the solution wasn't just hiring more staff but enhancing our team's capabilities, I took a self-taught approach to developing a comprehensive training program. This program was designed to equip team members with essential skills, improving retention, customer service, and aligning our operations with the company's vision.
Charged with implementing this strategy, I deconstructed all the essential skills our sales team needed to excel within a month. I developed a comprehensive 3-week training program to equip both current and new team members with these critical skills. Over the following month, I personally assessed the team, recommending actions to coach, invest in, promote, or replace members as needed.
Within six months—absent any public recognition—a few notable changes occurred (I won't cite specific figures as I no longer have those notes):
The turnover rate decreased, allowing us to invest more in team development than in constant recruitment and termination of unsuitable candidates.
Team retention stabilized and improved as members felt listened to, respected, and valued.
Customer service and sales saw noticeable improvements with a more motivated team in place, just to name a few.
In one year, I learned nearly everything I needed about leading—not just managing—a future company, covering various aspects of business from talent acquisition to loss prevention and strategic planning.
However, this story isn't just about my journey. It highlights the importance of using our talents and skills to strengthen our team's overall quality.
Nicknamed "The Professor," my fulfillment came from witnessing my team's success and growth.
